Credit & Debit Card Security

Here’s how to protect yourself from becoming a victim of card fraud and what to do if your accounts are compromised.

Here's what card fraud is about…

Credit and debit card fraud involves the unauthorized use of card information to make purchases or access funds.

Card fraud can occur when cards are lost or stolen, account information is revealed and used in a scam, or through a data breach.

Stay Protected:

Protect your cards and account information.

Add your cards to your digital wallet to make quick, secure and touch-free purchases all from your smartphone. Payment information is not shared with merchants or stored on the device.

Use your contactless card to tap to pay instead of inserting or swiping for a fast, easy, secure, and touchless way to check out.

Inspect ATMs, gas pumps, or credit card readers before using them. Be suspicious if you see anything loose, crooked, or damaged, or if you notice scratches or adhesive/tape residue.

Don’t disclose your account number over the phone unless you initiate the call.

Never disclose your credit or debit card PIN or your digital banking password to anyone, including credit union employees.

Don’t carry your PIN in your wallet, purse, or pocket – or write it on your card. Memorize your PIN.

Don’t sign a blank credit or debit card transaction receipt.

Draw a line through blank spaces above the total on credit or debit card transaction receipts so the amount can’t be changed.

Shred copies and save your receipts to check against your card statements.

Shred or cut up old cards, taking care to cut through the account number, before you throw them away.

Carry only the cards you’ll need.

Keep a record of your account numbers, expiration dates, and telephone numbers of each card issuer so you can report a loss quickly.

Regularly check your account activity, especially if you bank online. Compare the current balance and transactions on your statement to those you’ve recorded.

First Financial will never ask for your personal or sensitive information over the phone or via email.

Skip waiting for the mail.
